Manitoba Motocross Association: Race Report from Grunthal Centennial Raceway, Grunthal

Report and Photos by Doug Engstrom

September 10, 2008

After a rain out left the motocross addicts of the MMA with four weeks without a race, they finally got another fix when round five of the Fall Provincial Championship Series brought to you by Royal Distributing hit the track at Grunthal Centennial Raceway on Sunday.

1-2, 3-4 those were the moto finishes posted by Dylan Mollot on his way to an overall victory in the MX-1 junior class and a third place finish in MX-3 Junior.

With the CMRC National Series done and some time off before the Montreal Supercross RTR Performance rider Ryan Millar made a local appearance at GCR. Millar won four of the six motos he contested on his way to overall victories in the Youth and MX-1 Intermediate classes along with a second place finish in MX-2 Intermediate. With a flair for the dramatic Millar put on a show in the first MX-1 Intermediate/MX-2 Pro double gate. With the Intermediate class going on the second gate drop, Millar managed to make up the gap and pass the entire Pro class to be the first person on the track to the get to the checkered flag.

FXR Racing’s Josh Pfrimmer continues to amaze in his first season racing the big bikes. Pfrimmer came out on top of the battle(s) of the day in the MX-2 Intermediate class where his 2-1 bested the 1-2 rides put up by Millar. Pfrimmer completed his day by dominating the Supermini main and putting in a top five ride in the Youth class.

Wayne DeKoninck likely spent Monday shopping for hair dye to hide the grey hairs his son Cole gave him during his first outing in the 85cc 7-11 class aboard an 85cc machine. Cole hit the track in the first moto and promptly started launching that 85 off everything he could find on his way to a win. A fifth in the second moto left him third overall for the day. A pair of wins in the 65cc 7-9 class gave him the overall ahead of Jaxton Unrau and D.J. Burmey.

Brenden Lauze was a first time winner in the ATV Beginner class where his 1-2 finishes was good for the overall.

Kim Houde took home the Vet Master and 40+ class overalls.

While his daughter Ami, returning from injury did the same in the Ladies class.

A very happy Tom Regier got his first win in the first Youth B Qualifier.

Brayden Foster put in a strong day taking second overall in the 85cc 12-16 class to go with his sixth place finish in the Supermini main.

Brett Gaudry picked up a podium finish with second overall in the MX-1 Beginner class behind Duane Giesbrecht and ahead of Ryan Ritchie.

The other half of FXR Racing’s brotherly dynamic duo; Aaron Pfrimmer is starting to steamroll his way towards a possible Manitoba #1 Pro plate. Pfrimmer was picture perfect in the Pro classes taking all four moto wins.

Jessica Bell took both motos and the overall in the Little Ladies class ahead of Jessa Champagne and Morgan Blaquiere.

Westside Honda’s Luke Macfadden stretched his points lead in the 25+ class with a 2-1 day for the overall.

Ian Blair put in 8-6 rides for fifth overall in the Vet Junior class.

After some impressive motos at Walton, Jordan Devloo returned to a familiar spot at the top of the podium in the 65cc 10-11 and 85cc 7-11 classes.

Scott Giesbrecht found his way to the top of the MX-2 Beginner class podium with 5-1 moto scores.

Did you make it this far Tim or give up in disgust thinking you didn’t make the report? Tim Lavoie was on the gas at GCR posting an impressive second overall in the MX-2 Pro class along with a fourth place finish in the Youth class.

In the spring of 2005 a post I made on mxforum.com drew the attention of Allison Kennedy who contacted me about using the quote in the Noise section of Racer X Canada magazine. This chance encounter started a dialogue that resulted in the Provincial coverage I have submitted from Manitoba for the past four seasons. I nervously jumped into the project with nothing more than a heaping load of encouragement and guidance along with zero experience as either a photographer or “journalist”. Four years later I’ve had so many wonderful and rewarding experiences from becoming much more involved in this sport at a local level, to seeing my work published Nationally and used in National marketing campaigns. So to Jason Griffiths, Danny Brault, Allison Kennedy, anyone behind the scenes and especially Brett Dailey; I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunities, assistance, guidance and friendship offered over the past four seasons. I truly hope that we will all one day soon see you at the races…
